About the ChoralWorks Choir
ChoralWorks Collingwood is a 30-voice classically oriented chamber choir performing major works from great composers. We rehearse most Monday evenings and present concerts in the Collingwood area. Recent and past performances include Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Coronation Mass, Orff's Carmina Burana, Vivaldi's Gloria, and many more.

Brian Rae
Our Director was organist at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto for 40 years and was bestowed Papal Honours in 2006, as a knight of St. Gregory. An alumnus of St. Michael’s Choir School, he has held many positions in over 40 years at the school, including Director of Choral Music, Tour Director, organ and theory teacher as well as conductor of the Tenor-Bass and Senior Choirs. He was also head of the Instrumental and Theory Departments. Conductor, organist and accompanist, he now resides in Collingwood with his wife Dolores. At present he is an organist at St. Mary’s Church, Collingwood, and conductor of ChoralWorks Choir in Collingwood.

Joshua Tamayo (Pianist / Accompanist)
Pianist, music director, conductor, arranger, and composer, Joshua is a highly accomplished classically-trained musician whose talents are in demand throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
His passion for music comes from many years of piano lessons with his long time mentor and teacher, Peter Lam, and the inspiration drawn upon from ten years spent at St. Michael’s Choir School, where he specialized in organ and sacred choral music. His love for conducting blossomed at 12 years of age when he had the honour to be the guest conductor of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.
After receiving the Associate of the Royal Conservatory (ARCT) diploma with First Class Honours at age 13, Joshua continued to polish his craft at the piano by competing in various competitions at the national level and pursued music at the University of Toronto majoring in piano performance.
Joshua has performed with many diverse groups and artists including: Toronto Concert Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vocal Horizons Chamber Choir, Windmill Music Company, Opera York, Michael Ciufo (Canadian-renowned Tenor), Martha Joy (Canadian Idol Finalist), and conductors, Jordan de Souza and the late Kerry Stratton among others. He continues to share his love for music as his full time profession.
Maeve Palmer (Soprano)
"Triple Threat"... coloratura” (Opera Canada) Maeve Palmer is an alumna of the Rebanks Family Fellowship and the University of Toronto Opera School.
Maeve is a prize winner of the 2021 Jim and Charlotte Norcop Prize in Song (UofT), and a prize winner of the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition. She has performed with Tapestry Opera, New Music Concerts, Continuum Contemporary Music, Chorus Niagara and Opera Atelier.
This season, Maeve stars in the leading role in Kalman’s The Czardas Princess with Toronto Operetta Theatre. Recent operatic roles include Lydia, The Handmaid’s Tale (Banff Centre) and Adina, L’Elisir d’Amore (Highlands Opera Studio. Maeve has appeared as the soprano soloist in Bach’s Matthäus Passion, Mass in B Minor, Honegger’s King David, Bernstein’s Mass and Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia. Concert performances this season include debuts with Mandle Philharmonic in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Koerner Hall, and Messiah with St. James Cathedral Choir and Orchestra.
Maria Soulis(Mezzo-Soprano)
Toronto‐born mezzo‐soprano Maria Soulis began her career as a principal artist with the Regensburg Opera in Germany, performing the roles of Carmen, Rosina, Nicklausse, Dido, and Adalgisa in theatres throughout Germany
France and the United Kingdom. In concert works from Bach to Mahler, her voice has been praised internationally by reviewers who have described it as “warm and powerful”, as well as “gorgeous, dusky‐toned” with a “ruby red timbre”.
On Canada’s concert stages, Maria has performed as a guest artist with Kingston Symphony, ChoralWorks Collingwood, Aradia Ensemble, Canadian Sinfonietta, Mississauga Chamber Singers and in Messiah with Stratford Concert Choir. Maria has also performed with Stratford’s INNERchamber Ensemble.
Maria has appeared in principal roles with Pacific Opera Victoria (Die Walküre, Das Rheingold, Gianni Schicchi) and debuted as Marcellina in Against the Grain Theatre’s updated Figaro’s Wedding. Maria recently sang Princess Orlovska in Die Fledermaus (in concert) with the Stratford Symphony Orchestra.
Giles Tomkins(Bass Baritone)
Canadian/British bass baritone Giles Tomkins is widely praised for his vocal virtuosity and lyricism in an impressive range of repertoire. His rich, resonant voice brings “authority and power” to the concert and operatic stage, most recently as The King in Pacific Opera Victoria’s The Little Prince.
Giles has appeared as a guest soloist with many of Canada’s finest orchestras and choirs, including Regina Symphony, Windsor Symphony, Bach Elgar Choir, ChoralWorks Collingwood, Vancouver Bach Choir, Elmer Iseler Singers, and Chorus Niagara.
Acclaimed operatic roles for Giles include Fafner (Das Rheingold) and Hunding (Die Walküre) with Edmonton Opera, Timur (Turandot), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Colline (La bohème) and Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia). A frequent performer with the Canadian Opera Company, Giles sang the roles of Parson/Badger in their production of The Cunning Little Vixen (Janáček) as well as Zuniga in Carmen with Manitoba Opera.
Giles begins the 2025/26 season as Ed in Crow’s Theatre's powerful production of Octet, exploring the perils of internet addiction. Giles is Leporello in Don Giovanni with Hamilton Philharmonic and Gandalf with Cantabile Choirs of Kingston in their production of Dean Burry’s The Hobbit.
Ernesto Ramirez(Tenor)

Mexican-Canadian tenor Ernesto Ramirez is garnering rave reviews for his distinctive Italianate sound,“wonderfully fluid line and brilliant high notes,” combined with his “suave, nuanced lyricism.” Ernesto debuted as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Mexico’s Opera de León,
Rodolfo in La bohème with Pacific Northwest Opera, and sang Don José in Opera Kelowna’s Carmen. Ernesto recently starred as Cavaradossi with Mississauga Symphony in their fully staged Tosca, and as Don José in Carmen with Orchestre Classique de Montréal. Further engagements include Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur with Calgary Concert Opera Company, Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata with Southern Ontario Lyric Opera and Alfred in Die Fledermaus with Alberta Vocal Arts and with Stratford Symphony Orchestra.
Recent concert performances include Handel’s Messiah with Hamilton Philharmonic, Thunder Bay Symphony and Stratford Concert Choir, and in May Ernesto returns to ChoralWorks Collingwood for Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass. Ernesto has appeared with Symphony Nova Scotia in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which he has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Niagara Symphony, and Kingston Symphony. Ernesto’s “resplendent tenor” has been heard in performances of Verdi’s Requiem with The Peterborough Singers, Brott Music Festival and Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, Mexico.

2019-2023
After vibrant seasons through spring 2019, ChoralWorks took time for reflection and renewal. We returned stronger in 2022 with Handel's Messiah, followed by acclaimed performances of Mozart, Orff, Bernstein, and seasonal favorites—continuing our commitment to exceptional choral music in our community.
